Del - Both Sides of the Brain

Back in the day when I took hip hop way too seriously, I managed to overlook this absolute gem of an album.  It’s hilarious, goofy and lighthearted.  This is del the funky homosapien at his best.

Uterus Water

Did anyone notice that mum’s last two albums have been shit?  I just learned that lead singer Kria Brekken had broken away from the band many years ago and started a solo project, but still continued appearing on Mum’s album.  Now that I know this, it’s pretty easy to see what an influence Kria had on Mum’s early work. Kria Brekken’s solo stuff has everything that I loved about early Mum and more.  Lots of found sounds, amazing textures, and Krias raspy voice.  No more hippie campfire music (SASYDK).

Listen to Uterus Water.

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!

Do not judge this album by it’s cover, this is the best atlas sound solo effort to date.  Of course if you are a fan and follow his blog, then there is a good chance you’ve already heard a lot of these songs from previous leaks, but everything has been remastered here and expertly arranged.

Thank You, Chicago, Good Bye

Back to the Basics

Some things age well with time.  Cheese, wine, good whiskey. Add one more to that list,  Busta Rhymes - Extinction Level Event.  I remember when this album came out I was 15.  It was the most obnoxious thing I had ever heard, but now 10 years later, it is the most righteous album in my whole music library.  Lately I have been revisiting some of these early 90’s hip hop classics, and they still bang harder than just about anything I’ve ever heard.  I urge you to revisit some of these hip-hop classics, because they just don’t em like they used to.

Nas - Illmatic

This album will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those inner city kids who grew up in Queens, as well as the suburban white teenagers who drove around in there parents SUV smoking blunts.  This is a essential for any serious hip hop lover and/or preteen wigger.

Busta Rhymes - Extinction Level Event

Insane, obnoxious, you will make fun of it constantly with your friends.  When you are alone, you will be nodding your head in delight and trying to mimic busta rhymes double time raps.

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

This album hosts the song ‘Miss Fat Booty’, a certified banger.  ‘Speed Law’, ‘Brooklyn’ and ‘Mathematics’ are also standout tracks.  When you think of Mos Def, you probably recall MTV’s ‘Hip Hopera’ or his poor acting with Queen Latifa in the several movies that they’ve done together.  Listening to Black on Both Sides should lay waste to these feelings.

Bill Compton Mix

Bill Compton is a dark and mysterious character.  He has been dead for more than 200 years.  When the sun rises, he goes to sleep under a floorboard in his old 17th century house.  His movements are cold, calculated and precise, his thoughts are filled with logic and intelligence but he lacks emotion.  The only time he shows any sign of life is when he is with human girlfriend, Sookie Stackhouse.  This is Bill Comptons soundtrack..  A mix composed mainly of ambient idm, occasionally venturing into other genres such as techno, house and trip hop.  This mix is not endorsed by Bill Compton, and if he knew I made it he would probably kill me.  This is why you should download it now, before it’s too late.

Sleep - Hesitation Wounds

This is probably my favorite hip-hop release in the last year.  One of the best acts to come out of the Portland/Seattle hip-hop scene.  Check it out or catch a show if you live in Portland, you won’t be dissapointed.
